With a consistent link and overarching theme connecting our recently released tees, we thought we’d word you up on how some of the designs came about.

The piggy tee is one that has a clear link to the idea of financial freedom. For many, childhood years can commonly be associated with storing those coins of yours in some sort of piggy bank. With a subtle link to the youthful nature of our business as well as the financial market, the use of the pig came about naturally.

As well as the clear link to the financial aspect of the design, there is also an underlying personal link. To put it simply, this joint is the right investment.

With another new Sly Guild drop upon us...

SLY GUILD COUNTRY CAPS

With another new Sly Guild drop upon us we have been met with a number of different items. For us, the new country caps that just came through the door are the pick of the bunch.

Whilst currently harbouring a vast selection of the New Zealand made products in our pop up store and online, we have also taken a strong liking to the brands products ourselves. With a selection of headwear, shorts and tees in our own wardbrobes this is a brand we confidently back and recommend.

The country caps are certainly the icing on the cake. With a bold link to prominent symbols in our industry, these joints provide an audacious design with the usual Sly Guild quality to produce something special.

From the high quality leather closure strap to the shape and quality of
Embroidery, these well and truly hit the mark.

As well as being aesthetically pleasing in all areas, these are the perfect addition to any wardrobe. With the basic block colours, these are easy to mix up with just about anything. Comfort and simplicity is all you need.

With quite a few already on the heads of the crew,we suggest getting down to the pop up shop.

Launching in 2009 with a refreshing approach to eyewear design, 9five have been on the up and up since and the latest season drop may just be their best yet. Eyewear for the most part is a truly hit and miss accessory, so selecting pieces that compliment the shape of your face goes a long way. Pick frames that suit the lines of your face and bone structure or risk looking like Kanye in his shutter shades- this isnt advisable. Even the nicest pair of frames may not be suited to one person or another. This is what 9five changes with their latest offering. While most eyewear designers tend to offer a great variety of different frames with the hope that they cater to everyone, 9five have a different approach. Instead of offering every style under the sun they have designed a cohesive drop of frames, with a unified design element. Each unique in their own right but with the signature styling that is so evidently 9five. There’s something here to suit everyone, yet all the pieces look subtlety similar. This is what we love so much about the 9five drop; versatility with similarity.

The popular Watson returns in this drop and is a favourite of ours. Available in either matte or gloss black, both finishes offer rock solid construction, a comfortable fit and great shape. For those after something from the left field look no further than the A+. A refreshing take on the classic wayfarer design, these desire metal gold arms and frames with gloss black accents atop each eye.Expect the same solid build quality on the A+ as well as a lightweight frame that remain comfortable on the head.

The entire drop from 9five are available online and in the pop up now.

The second delivery from the Less...

STREETX RECOMMENDS…

The second delivery from the Less Fall/Winter release is currently gracing our store. With so many pieces oozing quality and style, we decided to go through the tough process of choosing our favourite piece. The choice certainly wasn’t easy.

From the Summer orientated surf themed strap backs to the tigerstipe camo pants, the season well and truly hits the mark.

However, my favourite piece would have to the the Less x Ebbets ballcap. Ever since stumbling across Ebbets products a couple of years ago I have always had a special affection for them. From the craftsmanship to the delicate materials used, they make a product carefully catering to many.

Less’ interpretation of the vintage Ebbets style is refreshing and gives it a new school twist. The lightweight denim and twill add a dimension different to most Ebbets collaborations we are used to. For me, The switch up of the materials used on the head and brim of the cap give it an extra edge and something different. The classic felt appliquéd lettering goes back the classic roots of the Ebbets pieces and the traditional ballcap. The mix of such different textures and materials makes for an excellent piece of headwear. Along with the materials used, the colourway plays perfectly into the current Australian season. With the sun heavily bearing down upon us, cooler colours make for a good choice. The mint and denim blue make for an excellent combination with a number of colours. Personally, I would go with the lightweight Less Toucan blue Oxford and a pair of the Sly Guild port shorts. Summer perfection.

As well as being an aesthetically pleasing choice, the quality and fit of this piece is undeniable. With all components of the piece being made in the USA, this piece is guaranteed to last.

With only 2 of these available we suggest spending those extra dollars and getting Ebbets and Less in your life.

Part one…

Based out of neighbouring...

SLY GUILD EXPOSÉ

Part one…

Based out of neighbouring New Zealand, Sly Guild are one of the most exciting brands we’ve seen in recent times. With a collection of cut n sewn pieces, headwear and a range of summer wear unrivalled in quality and uniqueness, we couldn’t be happier to bring this sensational brand to StreetX. With their first drop of headwear being an instant hit in the pop-up, we see great things in the future for Sly Guild. What sets their headwear pieces apart from the road so often travelled is a combination of unique materials, distinctive designs and a versatile range.

The Blanka 5 Panel typifies this, with a traditional 5 panel fit including a firm fit on the crown and strong brim it is exactly what you’d expect from a quality 5 panel hat. The part that interests us the most? It’s got to be that dense cotton twill intertwining a broad spectrum of colors. It’s as if the entire rainbow has been weaved into this hat and it has been done in a way that is both enticing to the eyes and makes it a versatile piece for the summer. Don’t let that thick cotton twill fool you, it’s the perfect all year round piece, with rugged construction to keep you warm in winter and enough breathability to be worn in summer it really is a piece you can wear any season of the year. What excites us most about the Blanka is the diverse spectrum of colors in the design, making it wearable with just about anything. Mate, any basic tee of any colour with the Blanka hat and you’re set. The plain black brim is the ideal contrast to the colorful crown and really breaks things up. Personally, I’m a big fan of hats that offer some sort of contrast, especially when we’re dealing with all-over prints or visually intense schemes. The Blanka’s black brim contrast hits the spot.

- Chang.

Keep your eyes peeled for another write upon the brand plus our new Sly Guild drop landing next week.

The new year marks our entrance into our second year of trading....

The new year marks our entrance into our second year of trading. We are proud to introduce the newest Australian...

DAPPERGANG

We are proud to introduce the newest Australian brand to our stock lineup, Dapper. Hailing from Sydney, Dapper have been making big moves since their recent introduction onto the Australian scene. With a strong desire to dabble in the popular realm of cut and sew, Dapper have come out with a big bang.

With many brands starting to take on the classic bucket hat, it has become pretty rare to find a bucket hat so well fitted and shaped. Many brands seem to miss the mark with bucket hat releases. However, Dapper have hit the nail well and truly on the head with their latest offering. With a snug fit and perfectly sized brim, they are a piece to suit any bucket aficionado. Also, to add to the positives, these joints are all delicately handmade and reversible. Buckets done right.

As well as the on point buckets, Dapper have also taken on luggage, outerwear and shorts. With all of the items being handmade, the quality is second to none. The Raoul coaches jacket is probably our favourite item of the season. From the bright exterior to the contrasting brown drawstrings, this piece is a must have. As well as looking the part, the garment fits true to size and wears exactly how a rugged jacket should.

The full Dapper range is now available exclusively in our Perth based pop up store. The drop will also be going online if it makes it past this weekend in the pop up.

TOOMUCH TOOMUCH.

The latest edition to our brand line up is a London based heavyweight, TooMuch.

With a background in the London underground, the brand has been putting in work since 2005. Born out of the love of street culture, design and creativity, the brand has product something that caters to a number of subcultures. With inspiration taken from Haute couture, Jamaican dub, UK graff culture and local music scene the brand has gone from strength to strength producing offerings which represent their London roots.

With a mix of global iconic patterns, British flavour, youth and independence the brand represents the life of many street crawlers in London as well as the world over. As we see with most brands currently coming out of the UK, the product quality is once again top notch. You will not be disappointed with the quality of these pieces. The US-made headwear combined with quality fitting tees makes for an extremely solid drop of pieces from the London streetwear kings.

Get ready, we will be releasing TooMuch THIS FRIDAY in the pop up shop.

With an aesthetic based around basic colours, materials and quality construction the brand has launched itself perfectly. Along with Puig, more than a handful of the best European pros are wearing and repping Hélas. With a number of viral images of these skaters repping the brand, the Hélas name is already spreading over the internet and worldwide. With high quality products, the right team and a good list of stockists the brands growth has no ceiling and we expect to see it gain momentum and popularity quickly. Our new delivery features 6 new styles and colour ways perfect for the Australian Summer. Each design features a focus on the substance of minimal branding and quality of construction. Our two picks of the bunch have to be the Red corduroy Capone cap and the Khaki Polas Cap. The Capone cap features a unique closure, unlike any we have seen before. Rather than the usual leather or woven closures we are used to, this cap features a plastic ziplock-like system. We are really liking the uniqueness of the closure as well as the comfort of the cap itself. For anyone chasing something understated, the Khaki Polas cap is your piece. The limited branding and straightforward colour schemes make for a versatile hat for anyone. A massive feature of all the caps from this drop is the internal lining inherent on all pieces. All the caps feature a contrasting lining that give them an extra bit of ‘pop’. Again highlighting the simple measures Hélas have taken to ensure individuality in their creations. For us, the little things like this matter and these caps tick all the boxes in that area. Take our word for it, these are on point and will be gone soon! These are available exclusively in Australia through StreetX.

StreetX pocket tees.

CONTINUED…

The recent collaboration with Hasbro’s superpower franchise Transformers is a big step for Illest and is their most significant collab to date. The release featured a number of tees which were snapped up immediately at release parties at both of the Illest stores and have also been selling like hotcakes here at StreetX, both in the pop up shop and online. We sold most of our stock on release day with only a couple of pieces left, so get in quick if you missed the drop! As well as the transformers collaboration, Illest have also two weeks ago released their super limited collaboration with audio manufacturer Beats by Dr. Dre. Beats by Dr. Dre are THE name in must have audio products right name and for Illest to be offered the collaboration is huge for the brand. The drop featured only 200 pairs of the expensive headphones being released across both flagship stores and online.

Similarly to the transformers collab Illest are staying true to their roots in picking collaborations that resonate with their core values and brand identity that focuses around automotive culture. The headphones designed in the Beats by Dr. Dre collab feature a black safari print with touches of grey and gold and were inspired by Illest’s latest project car, the Illest Pandora One RWB – a hand built one off Porsche 911 which itself is a collaboration with RWB/RAUH-Welt BEGRIFF- a renowned Porsche tuning company located in Japan! In essence the headphones are a product of collaboration and were inspired by a separate collaboration. It’s remarkable how on point Illest have been in choosing their collaborations and the brands they work with creatively. Too often we see brands accepting collabs just because they can and these tend to leave us, the consumer puzzled at the sheer illogicalness of doing something just because you can as opposed to carefully picking creative enterprises that accurately reflect brand identity. It is imperative in maintaining true brand identity to pick those brands that reflect the core values of your company and Illest have displayed this perfectly. I’m all for interesting and wacky creative partnerships, but I also think its key to do things because you should and not just because you can.

The next drop of Illest gear is their Holiday 2012 Collection and features a number of clean cut and sewn pieces including six staple tees, a couple of crewnecks and a range of headwear. Illest continue to improve their range with each collection with this drop featuring some of the nicest pieces we’ve seen from them. The tees are super clean and simple which is just the way we like it and the all over print 5 panel and ‘undisputed champs’ snapback are on point.

With more than a decade in the creative industry and support for their lifestyle line continuing to gather momentum worldwide, Illest are a name to watch in the future and no doubt will be coming up with more great releases in the New Year.

The new Illest drop will be available in the pop up shop and online shortly!

- Chang

ILLEST: MORE THAN MEETS THE EYEBrands come and go in the ever...

ILLEST: MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE

Brands come and go in the ever changing marketplace of streetwear, with many meeting a short demise due to an inability to stay relevant to the needs of the consumer. However one brand that is showing significant signs of longevity as it’s popularity and quality of product steadily increases is Illest. With deep roots in the US automotive scene the brand has evolved from much more than just a trendy name in car culture to a household label in popular streetwear today.

When developing ideas and designs, inspiration comes in many forms. We are used to seeing brands drawing influences from such scenes as skate culture, hip hop culture and locally in Australia – surf culture, however Illest have taken their inspiration from automotive roots and brought these ideas and concepts to their products . Whilst many may not be familiar with the history behind Illest it has existed for quite some time and started out as a sub-brand of Fatlace – a primarily hip hop focused blog which also had a strong presence and interest in the San Francisco car scene. Fatlace was started out of San Fran’s iconic Japantown and founder Mark Arcenal (ex Global Digital Lead for Nike Sports Wear) created Illest as a shop and lifestyle brand to be a sub-brand of Fatlace. Illest was developed as a way of bridging the gap somewhere between street fashion, the hip-hop culture the team themselves grew up with and the thriving car modification scene that existed in San Fran at the time.

Arcenal, a self-confessed car junkie found a way of bringing his two loves together in forming Illest and after finding success with the Fatlace blog they setup shop in San Fran. Fatlace offered a unique retail experience given the diverse backgrounds of the team and the diversity of the brand and so the shop found a unique following of customers from all different scenes. The Fatlace store in San Fran still operates and in January last year an Illest store was opened in downtown Los Angeles. The LA store has become the flagship store for the brand and its common to see lines of people around the block when releasing new season drops. Arcenal, as creative director of Fatlace and Illest oversees both retail stores and also operates the brands two design studios in California and Japan. The Fatlace brand has come a long way since being founded in 1999.

Automotive culture was a heavy focus of the Fatlace blog and was the inspiration behind starting the offshoot of Illest as a brand in its own right. The blog has slowly become a primarily automotive focused outlet which looks mainly at American automotive culture. Although nowadays the style of super low cars on wide wheels is a global tuning phenomena it has been championed by the American hellaflush movement who took their inspiration from Japanese drift culture in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Whilst the US style we see these days is popular the world over, it is vastly a product of the Japanese cultures of old. It’s interesting to see the way influences can be drawn from one thing, interpreted and manipulated and then become something entirely different and new. This is what we have witnessed from the guys at Illest, who’ve taken their passion for fine automotive tuning, combined it with their eye for design and fashion and come up with a refreshing brand identity which is rather unique in a time when the market is saturated by many brands who lack depth and individuality.
